How about using the Canon CN22 motor as a replacement. This motor is very popular motor. Used in HO scale in the Coach Yard brass locomotives. These pull very well. Should not be an issue for S scale.

The longer motor has more torque and better low end speed control. You have to figure that all the flat can Sagamis have the same commutator/brush space, so that extra 4 mm is a big difference in armeture length. Anyhow, it runs exactly like my other brass and modified AM F units... Have fun!
