Not really (speaking as only a jackleg machinist--if I can even claim that), as 
we don't give them the same frequency of use as an industrial process would; a 
commercial use would give them more wear in a month than almost all of us 
hobbyists would in a lifetime.

More likely is breaking them, and I have managed to do that several times, 
usually through haste and impatience; if the only the tip of a taper tap is 
broken off, one can grind it flush to produce that useful item, a plug or 
bottoming tap for blind holes.  I have bought extra taps against
urgent need when carelessness would leave me high and dry (only those living 
near that increasingly-rare phenomenon, a fully-stocked local
hobby shop, can afford the luxury of not stocking up on essentials).
