Thanks for the clarification. Your explanation settles it for me. Anyway,
it's OK to have a tuscan red AM GP-9.

Tom

Okay, here we go:

N&W's first diesels were four RS3s and four GP9s delivered in black in 1955.
The floodgates opened in 1956 and everything was black through 1957, including
six passenger GP9s numbered 762-767. N&W did lease some ACL and RF&P Es and
relettered them N&W at this time.

The passenger GP9s went back to EMD in 1958 for larger fuel and water tanks,
getting new numbers 500-505 and the red paint. This was also applied to new
passenger GP9s 506-521 delivered in 1958, and the leased Es were sent back
home. N&W switched to Pevler blue in 1966, although some of the passenger GP9s
had received blue in late 1965.

In 1978, SD40-2 6175 and C30-7 8010 were delivered in red with gold lettering,
and C30-7s 8076-8080 came in red in 1979. This red was somewhat darker than
what the GP9s had in their day, but was still quite a bit brighter than PRR red.

The red 620 at Spencer is a museum special.
