Dick, my observations are pretty similar to yours.  The main difference 
is that a chunk of my living has to come from my work for the various 
magazines.  Indeed, like you, I push S through the general magazines but 
I put S specific content in S only magazines, primarily the Dispatch 
since I'm on the staff.  Actually all three magazines need more and 
better content. Two need more advertisers with better designed ads (most 
are stuck in the 50's) that don't run for months on end without change.

I have only been a subscriber to 1/64 for a year or so, but I enjoy 
what's there. It could use some meat, however.   I think it's a matter 
of finding writers who can commit to an article, so that means beating 
the bushes for content.  I'm always happy to contribute if my work is 
desired.  Unfortunately the magazine sees to be an orphan in search of a 
family.
