PRR's famous "Dark & Lonely", officially the Downingtown and Lancaster RR
, thru Lancaster & Chester counties, PA could be modeled with freight
action and one diesel powered BROADWAY LIMITED passenger set.
On the evening of Nov 1st, 1970, PC re-routed the BROADWAY over the D &
L, because they dumped a freight train in what is now my back yard,(
LEAMAN JUNCTION ) at prox 1030 that Sunday morning. The wreck tore out the
two
remaining tracks, the catenary, signals, etc. They were 'caught"
attempting to bury brand new 1970 FORDS, destroyed in the accident on a
neighbors
property. The neighbor took offense to that action. I am told there are
still car parts, axels, etc along the bank on the north side of the tracks.
Sounds like a modeling opportunity.
BTW, the remainder of the D & L was massively rebuilt by CONRAIL now has
welded rail on most, if not all of it.

And GS steam locos are also not absolutely necessary to model the SP. A
mid 1950's era branch line like the Santa Cruz could be modeled completely
prototypically with 4 plastic GP9's and 2 cupola cabooses. I would not be
surprised to find that GS streamliners never set foot on the branch although
I did see an SD45 and a tunnelmotor over here in later years, and today all
one needs is one old GP20 and a few freight cars to be correct.
Most modelers don't have the space for a convincing representation of
mainline operations anyway so smaller locos and shorter trains simplifies the
design decisions.....dave
