You need a disc sander (with speed control) to sand the abutting joint surfaces
when you want to splice car body sections. or a 6" belt sander with some speed
control.
I have done this with at least 20 cars over the years. You need good tools.
Figure 25 years of use and the yearly cost is minimal.

I just gave a South Bend drill press to the Friends of the East Broad Top.
I bought it in 1963. A solid piece of machinery. At 89 I did not plan on
anymore "holy" work.

The MicroMark 10 inch disc sander allows you to do almost anything.
Sand wood, plastic or brass. Your imagination will keep you busy. Minimize
hand filing.

Hi Michael, No it's a regular stanley No. 60 1/2 model low angle block plane.
I sharpen it very well and just use it on fine work.
The size helps keep a fair edge when joining splices. I lay the car body on
the workbench( actually on a thin spacer board to raise it up above the lower
edge of the plane blade ) and lay the plane on it's side to keep the joint
square while smoothing it with very fine shavings. These planes were designed
to cut the end grain of butcher blocks so plastic is not that much of a
challenge for them...dave
