Hi Bob --
The deed is done. The old steps were filed and ground away and new steps were
fabricated from flat wire with the intermediate step soldered inside the
“frame” of the whole thing. Gets pretty strong after that. Rather than go
through a 1000 little drills and pinning the steps to the car, I instant glued
the steps to the car side just under the top flange and to the lower flange.
While it won’t take rough handling, it should be OK (isn’t that the reason they
were cast-on in the first place?). Once I get the paint touched up, I’ll
take another photo. One last touch will be restraining angles ”welded” to the
deck of the car to keep the transformer load in place. I have seen photos of
such things still stuck on a deck after the car had been unloaded, probably to
be removed by the next user.
I like the idea of the wood end decks. I won’t make that change, however --
I have enough time and treasure tied up in this thing already! If you have
the chance, I would like to see the photos that you have. I did this one from
a photo (builder’s?) that Bill Lane sent me.
Have fun!

Bill, I started working on one some time ago. I used some photos of
two units that were setting on a team track on the old SAAP line not far
from my studio. One was an ex NYC relettered for PC. Both were loaded
with electrical equipment. I made the mistake of not organizing or
seperating the negatives, because I can't tell the differences between
the two units and their features. What I did like on them was those
vertical 'fins' that are used for tie downs--some had been removed
meaning even a AF car with some broken would be prototypical. I also
noticed the very thick rough wooden decking used on the raised end
platforms--that's a lot to model in some ways. The decking had
countersunk bolt heads and hundreds of nails driven into it to hold down
crated loads.
In my version, I thought about keeping the end stirrups, what are you
going to use as replacements? My wife could care less!
