I do believe your statement that "S Scalers don't support the hobby" is really incorrect (for lack of a better word).
Remember that of the total model railroad market, S GAUGE is less than 10% and of that S SCALE is about 20% of that, based on some of the numbers that have floated around on the lists. Even O is second to HO, I believe, followed by N? That does not make for a big S scale market. Then within that SCALE market you have ERA, need and dollars amongst other criteria. I model the late 90's - many of the items I've seen listed are too early for me. For example, the reefers SHS has are nice, neat, etc but are out of place for me. I have bought a few things because I wanted them but didn't really need them. I think we've all done that. SMMW's 44 tonners are a nice to have but I have two Steam Depots so I don't want anymore. I did get two of his 70 tonners - still not sure what I'll use them for. I model a short line with 5 locomotives in its roster. With the AM GP9 and the SHS switcher, I can model 4 of them. After 1999, they traded one of the switchers to a model I don't think any Gauge has. The 5th locomotive will probably never be made in S. Oh well. I can live with it. Then there's the money. We're all getting older, and the cash is slowly getting tight, particularly if the wife finds out what you're spending. DPH had the EMD SD45 on the horizon. I want one. I need one (well okay that point is a bit stretched). And hopefully, when it does arrive, the money will be there. Amen for summer OT. So, yes, S Scalers are supporting the hobby. But there are a lot of factors that determine how far they can support it.
