Can't speak for John Deagan or Jim King on this, but I know if I spent a
couple of months of my spare time gathering plans, contacting historical
societies, and working with a supplier to develop a car I wanted and didn't
expect to make a profit off, I would want it the way I wanted it, regardless of
sales. Ask Bill Lane if he thinks John is doing this to make a living.
I'm truly ignorant of hi-rail and American Flyer. I was told that hi-railers
would not buy detailed scale models. Seems odd, since I've seen some really
great American Flyer kitbashes.
Showing my ignorance, since the problem seems to be wheel flanges, I've asked
if a hi-railer couldn't just add Kadee washers, or those plastic thingys that
come with SHS, to raise the height of the car to clear the underbody? Again I
don't know, but if you're using AF couplers a 16th of an inch wouldn't matter.
But most of all keep in mind that John didn't decide to make a living doing
this, he just wanted a car and for all the work he had to do why make a car
that doesn't meet his needs? No insult to anyone, just for all that effort and
no money I wouldn't want something that didn't fit my wants.
This applies to all such projects, not just the SAL car.
Since this John's project I won't do it, but I wish John would set up a poll
on this list as to how many cars people would buy?

  Thanks,
  George Courtney
