Andre, Probably had a short somewhere,usually in the control stand. When I  
worked for Indiana Hi-Rail this happen frequently on the Alco's. Older 
EMD's  will also do this. Most of the time just moving the throttle up or down 
a 
 notch  would take care of it. On one of the RS 11's there was a spot  
between 3 and 4 notch that would do this and put out black smoke like crazy. We 
 
used to get the buffies all foamed up with that. One things for sure,it 
will  definitely get your attention. As the Hi-Rail wrench turners would tell 
us  "Just don't use 1 notch".
