I'm over 55 and have no recollection of steam in revenue service. But then
I grew up in Bethlehem, PA and the anthracite railroads all dieselized early
(or went under).
When I was younger, I used to do some railfanning and could even tell most
of the diesel models apart. Then something happened, I became to like
steam, and didn't care about diesels at all, and finally realized (actually
fairly recently), that what I liked most in rolling stock was wooden cars.
Metal is OK for tank cars and hoppers, but boxcars should at least have
wooden sheathing. So now I need to back date further.
Maybe it's just that you need to be "mature" to appreciate S scale, and some
us mature earlier than others. I did start with AF at Christmas, I just
turned 1.
