About eight years ago I had a chance to purchase one Frank Titman's RDG 2-8-0
kits and as pointed out it was an interesting collection of bits and pieces
--- including a piece of aluminium beer can to enclose the AF mechanism
opening in the plastic shell. He had cut off the original smoke box and stack
area and provided a chunk of Plexi-glass tube wrapped with sheet brass with
preformed rivets and a new brass stack (to be attached.) Supposedly all the
bits and pieces came from SLS but Frank's hand was in many of the small parts
such as soft straight pins to be used as the rivets holding the running gear.
(The pin was inserted into the rod ends and then cliped off approx 1/32 of an
inch long to be knealed over by tapping the soft pin between an anvil (in my
case, a steel machinist block) and a hammer.) Following his extensive
instructions, I got it assembled and quartered without the aid of a quartering
jig but it took hours to get it quartered. It looks good and runs well (but not
as well as an SHS consolidated.)
