Congrulations Bill, on unearthing things! All it takes is a tour to get
things flowing again!
I've spent the last two Saturday's in the heat of Texas (we've had 20
straight days of 100++ temperatures) outdoors building two modules. I
had planned these a few years ago to balance our layout. We've got a
large train show coming up in Oct, so I wanted to get things going.
Last weekend I built the skeletons of two 6' x 2' sections. I had
planned to add the decking today, but my source of material didn't work
out, so I did add the buss wiring and terminal strips. I'm trying to
make these guys lighter that anything we've built to date. I put one
unit on a scale and it came in at about 13 lbs so far. In the past
we've always thought we could make them lighter and still keep the
strength, but we've always ended up thinking they weighted a bit too
much. I'm going to try Gatorfoam as decking replacing plywood. I've
thought about various materials to use as 'stuffing' plus some door skin
to get to our common 1/2" thickness in order to match our older units.
All these seemed to be a lot of work with unknown results. The
Gatorfoam, despite it cost, is an ideal and known element for me.
I've rounded up raw homasote from a member, so the mainline will be
taken care of. He also gave me some very nice product called Vinyl
Roadbed. Seems like it should work fine for the sidings and industry
trackage. Does anybody have experience with this stuff? Send any
suggestions my way--thanks,
Bob Werre
