Hi Bob and all --
Today was the “beat the heat” train meet in Prescott. It’s called that
because we are usually 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix, and today was perfect,
maybe 75 to 80 for the morning part of the meet. I also found two books for
$5 each, one of which is VERY hard to find, so my day was made.
While I was there, I ran into a couple of guys who had some interest in scale
S, so I invited them over when their time at the meet was done. Of course,
when I got back I continued to work in the trainroom to make it easier for the
guys to see what I was up to. They finally showed up about 3 and we went up
to run trains. Well about the 4th trip around the layout the first train quit,
and a minute later the second one stubbed its toe and quit. Gremlins and
guests! Well, we all decided that they had seen enough already, and this just
made a good excuse to send them on their way.
So tonight I had to find out what happened. The loco that stubbed its toe
will need more tuning up. This is not a surprise, as it is the newest and
until a few days ago it had barely turned a wheel. The other problem was a
bit more difficult, because it was not in the track, train or wiring. It
turned out that one of the “neaten up” things I did was to put a retainer ring
nut on an electrical switch. That was not the problem, but what I had done
was flipped the toggle to connect the industrial yard to the buss. That was
not the problem either, but I was narrowing it down. It finally turned out to
be a short in a car sitting on one of the sidings that had not seen test power
before, so the car had not been detected as being a problem before.
Someday I WILL be really ready for an open house...
More fun!?
