Hey, Andre.
Going back into the past, there've been many freelanced railroad systems in the
model railroading press. Some were more convincing that others. I'll just
mention two for now.
John Allen's Gorre & Dapheated, was a magnifiecnt railroad, perhaps the first
"big" model railroad many of us were exposed to. And yet, somehow, it didn't
have the quite the "feel" of a real railroad, at least to me. (And it wasn't in
the name. When I was a young 'un, I unknowiningly constantly mispronounced it.
I didn't get the "joke" until later...)
I found Whit Tower's Alturas and Lone Pine a more convincing railroad. Why?
I'm still really not sure, but it had the right "feel" for the real thing.
Perhaps it was because the A&LP was more "typical" in appearance. The G&D had
many unique features built into it, perhaps too many.
Yet, both suited the needs of their builders and I enjoyed reading about them.
It's a tough decision whether to freelance or go prototype. I've been
freelancing most of my model railroad life. From time to time, I've thought of
throwing in the towel and going full throttle into either the Santa Fe or CB&Q
modeling, but I keep wandering back to my current Kansas Grain Belt.
The KGB was in jeopardy for some time. The concept was there, but it floundered
until I did a up pair of AM RS3's for the road. Then things finally clicked:
It's what I wanted to do.
In fact, things seem most right with the world when I remove all the "alien"
motive power from the layout and just have the KGB's power present.
