Thank you, Butch. It does help to have complete control over what you can see! (i.e. the photo angle to make the model look its best). If you were to see it in person, you can spot the issues fairly quickly, I suspect. However, that only serves to drive me to do better the next time. I enjoy such a challenge.
I do hope that this article inspires people to try scratchbuilding. At first the project is overwhelming. I was fully aware that "one does not build a hopper as a first project... do a flat car instead", but what fun is that! :-) I started with the basic frame and then just moved on from there. Each step I studied whatever reference material I had available. Sometimes I discovered something that I should have done differently in a previous step, but rather than toss the project and start over, I pressed on. I was afraid that if I tossed the project, I might not start over! If you have the time, scratchbuilding is a lot of fun and very rewarding, I think.
