Ed:

SHABBONA RR road switcher locomotives are black, so I simply painted the number
boards black and numbered them with white number decals. The AM F-units are a
different story, since they have clear plastic number board inserts. My plan
for them is to simply use white number decals and let the light from inside the
locomotive highlight them. Unfortunately, this latest is still way down on the
list.

If you want lighted number boards, try printing the numbers on white decal
paper with a black background, or print them in "white" on a black background
on clear decal paper. Since most inkjet printers do not print white, the
numbers will show up clear.

In either case cut them out and apply them to a piece of clear styrene, then
cut the styrene to fit the number board openings. I haven't tried this either
way, so can't vouch for its success.
