HI Dave. I considered that. The problem is that it's not just the flange. If
you look at the NMRA standards for Hi-Rail you will notice that the wheels are
much wider and the inside flange to flange dimension is tighter. So just
grinding down the flanges won't fix the problem. I am just getting started so
I don't have hundreds of cars to deal with. I have been careful to purchase
only SHS and AM Models products that can go either way so that is a non-issue
for me. Sound is a subjective thing... Tsunami is a nice system and I will have
several of them installed very soon. To my ear RailSounds is better quality.
My Flyonel Mikado has a fantastic whistle on it. My 4 yr old asks me if he can
"not run it, but just play the whistle" all the time. It sounds that real.
I'm not trying to win any converts or anything. I know this is the scale
group. But, I think there may be more people out there than just me that are
interested in the middle ground between scale and Hi-rail though. I have the
luxury of designing my layout to accommodate both since I am at that point in
my S Gauge journey... I took Doug's advice and put a call into Custom Trax to
see if they would be willing to build the turnouts I want. If not, no biggie.
I will hand-lay my own. Even that is at least 6-8 months away. I have a
basement to finish before the layout construction can begin.

Regards,
Jonathan

Why not just grind the lionel flanges down to scale size? That seems a lot
easier than messing with problematic switches and putting toy wheels on a
hundred scale cars? I've had railsounds and DCC and I don't think railsounds is
any better than tsunami, it just sounds louder cause the common O scale locos
have larger speakers. In think DCC with tsunami is more compatible with other
scale manufacturers products than running TMCC. TMCC/railsounds parts are too
big for many smaller locos while DCC and Tsunami are pretty
compact.....DaveBranum
