In that case it's probably the easiest to go with the large flanges on
everything and just build the switches to fit them. I don't think mixing in
some scale flanges with large flanges would add anything to the total scene but
would complicate the track work. The problem I can see is the large flanges
make it hard to build cars to proper proportions as they interfere with some of
the underframe and detail parts. I guess it comes down to a choice between
emphasizing certain loco features or emphasizing the overall appearance of the
layout and we all have our own preferences and goals. An S scene with large
flanges actually doesn't look much different than the common N scene in photos
and lots of folks are happy with those . ....DaveBranum
