White's Auto Stores carried American Flyer around Christmas time. 

 I was pretty old before it dawned on me the extra track my dad showed up with 
a few days after Christmas when I got my AF set came from their after-Christmas 
sale!

As I recall, my Western Auto had only Lionel; could have been that another 
[hardware and plumbing] store in the small city had the AF franchise?
