Jim,
I have heard a O scale Big Boy with double PFM setups,  sounded great 
when starting but at speed it became just noise.  However, with the more 
modern sound decoders, the adjustments can certainly help in that regard.

A local modeler who has since past on, had reportedly put two drive 
shafts from a single motor.  One shaft was contained within the other.  
Obviously the smaller or inside shaft continued to the front set of 
drivers.  I don't know if it was a great success or not, but he was darn 
good at things like that.
