All this discussion has made me reminisce about the efforts the NASG made to
publicize S scale and promote growth in the scale during my tenure as president
(2001-2005). Those were exciting times for S, but the struggle to get proper
recognition as a major player amongst the scales was a tough then as it is now.
I remember how Don Thompson had to campaign hard to get one of his F3's
included in the usual N, HO, (S), O, and large scale comparisons. And this was
for the so called World's Greatest Hobby promotion.
I got the BOT to approve a promotions "czar" and gave him a yearly budget. We
bought some software to generate our own advertisements and aimed them at
certain yearly publications like the ones that Kalmbach was putting out. The ad
in RMC began back then as well. There were times that it seemed like charging
windmills, but we tried our best because of our love for S. I know there is
disagreement about how to go about promoting the scale when you consider the
diversity of scale, hirail and AF compatible, etc. I always tried to be
even-handed to all aspects of S, because there are many roads leading others to
come into S and I felt that all these avenues were worth exploiting.
But, when you think about it, after all that effort, nothing has changed. S is
still a tough sell. However, I take heart when folks like Brian come along. As
long as guys like him like what they see and give S a try, there is always hope
that our scale will perpetuate and continue to grow. Let's hang in there (and
hang together).
