All so true Roy, and I would like to add what I think is the one of the best
promotions for S: Getting it running in front of the general public.

Several years back we set up our KC S Gaugers 48ยน modular layout at Union
Station for a show. The Monday after I was shopping at my LHS and the
manager told me that a guy and his kids came in and wanted an S starter set
after seeing our trains run. Even though I was a regular, and had been
trying to persuade the LHS to carry more S, told him about SHS, AM and
Flyonel, and how there were sets available, he still tried to talk them
into O gauge. But these folks were persistent and insisted there must be
some way to get a starter set. Finally, the manager got out the Walthers
catalog and piece by piece put together a starter set for the man and his
family. The LHS did have some K-Line AF style track and a suitable
transformer. I once again told the manager about the starter sets available
and he was astonished, as though I were bringing it up for the first time.

I have to admire people like that customer though. Not many that determined
I suspect.

<All this discussion has made me reminisce about the efforts the NASG made
to publicize S scale and promote growth in the scale during my tenure as
president (2001-2005). Those were exciting times for S, but the struggle to
get proper recognition as a major player amongst the scales was a tough then
as it is now. I remember how Don Thompson had to campaign hard to get one of
his F3's included in the usual N, HO, (S), O, and large scale comparisons.
And this was for the so called World's Greatest Hobby promotion. >
