and he notes -

Reading all this reminds me of the Coca Cola
debacle when they tried changing the name on the
bottle to "Coke". The logic was everybody bought
a Coca Cola called "Coke" so why not name it that
and give the public what they ask for. Well they
did it and found out that the public didn't
recognize the name and sales plummeted. They were
using a vernacular to purchase a well known
product and "Coke" quickly changed back to Coca Cola.

NASG has been around for 50 or so years and is
well recognized as an organization devoted to
1/64th proportion modeling, whether exact (or
nearly so) scale, Hi-Rail or Tinplate, Narrow or
Standard track gauge. Many of the members call
the size "S Scale" since they want to emphasize
adherence to scale dimensions. Others model a mix
of scale and tinplate and others just want to run
trains and some just like the size.

The term "Gauge" to identify a model scale has
been in use for nearly a century and "S Gauge"
was adopted by NMRA in 1943 and has been used
ever since. Change the name and it becomes another "Coke" - nobody'll buy it!
