Your point is well taken , and I understand it philosophically. Regarding trains, however, my simple mind defines ³modern era,² as whenever steam went away and we were left with all diesels on the main lines. Never mind the odd steam specials and excursions such as the 844, 3985, 261 and theme park engines.
When I finish my new layout it will cover an even more elusive target: the ³transition era² which will include steam AND diesel. Heck, on my web site www.unionstationphotos.com, I have a photo of the 844 at Union Station Kansas City with Amtrak, a line of UP yellow passenger cars and several excursion end cars parked on the house tracks at the time. And that was 2000-something. Using that photo as a prototype go-by, I could, in theory, put a 1/64th Prius in the shot (if I could find one) and be technically correct. Sheesh, you¹re right. It IS a moving target :) Roy From: richgajnak <[email protected]> Reply-To: S-Scale <[email protected]> Date: Sun, 04 Dec 2011 15:13:58 +0000 To: S-Scale <[email protected]> Subject: {S-Scale List} Re: Let's Get Modern, and an emotional advertisement! The thing one has to accept is "modern" is a moving target. It all depends on the point in time one is doing the viewing from. After all, how many people planning to watch Julie Andrews on cable in "Thoroughly Modern Millie" would expect a musical about 2011? I have a copy of a publication called "Modern Railroads." The cover date is 1953. Does that establish the fixed point in time for identifying everything beyond as modern? From the view of 1953, yes. From the view of 2011, no. When discussing "modern," one must first estabish a reference point. Once that viewpoint is established, talking about the F7 as being modern from a 1950 viewpoint is just as accurate as the SD70ACe is modern from a 2011 viewpiont. There will come a time when things we consider as "modern" today will will no longer be viewed as modern in a future year.
