Yes, I do mean a DC motor with scale wheels and all.  Might not be possible.

Certainly true, and adding a bridge rectifier is another simple way to convert 
an AF engine to DC operation.

I suspect when Tom says "DC drive" he really means "scale wheeled DC drive". A 
much bigger deal to create.
