Not as many discover it because there is not as much S for them to find. O
three rail and flyer are the parallel universes of O and S scales and the same
percentage of availability applies. It's just harder for newbies to connect
with S than with O and given the availability numbers that should be expected.
It's even harder for us that know about S to connect with it compared to O or
HO. For instance I recently wanted to build a model of a 57 foot mech reefer
and there was no S cars available but I found tons of HO models for about $5
each so now I got a neat little PFE fleet in various colors and heralds. If I'd
wanted to take up more shelf space and spend more I coulda done the same thing
in O scale but there's no way I could do it in S scale so the modern modeler
who wants some reefers is reluctantly gonna decide to fore-go S for O if they
want to move up in size or just stay in HO if they don't have room for O.
