Mr. Wade makes an excellent point. Even worse is the old S adage that if you
ask ten S guys what they want, you will get twelve answers since two of them
will change their minds before you finish asking the question.

I view this lack of consensus as a sign of S maturity. S now has more products
than in the distant past. In the goode olde daze, 100 guys agreed to buy a NYC
import. Many of them had no desire for such a loco, but the next promised loco
was a PRR prototype. The NYC loco could simply be sold off over the following
year or two. Then the following year, 100 guys agreed to buy a PRR import.
Many of them were NYC enthusiasts, but the next promised project was a NYC
prototype. So the NYC guys and the PRR guys both got what they wanted in the
long run by suscribing to this tit-for-tat process. Working together
cooperatively was beneficial to everyone.

Today, due to our maturity, nobody wants anything except what they want for
themselves. The cooperative spirit is pretty much a thing of the past.
Struggling with adversity is no longer viewed as admirable. Creative thinking
has been replaced with "when can I buy it" attitudes.

A few exceptions here and there, of course. But, in general, I would suggest
that our basic minimum S needs have all been met and we are mostly looking for
the cherry on top of the hot fudge sauce and are unwilling to settle for
anything less. In the goode olde daze, wanting an operating speeder would have
been viewed as sheer lunacy.

Yes......a sign of maturity.
