  Hi Ed, I think it started because 33 X 3 was the closest they could get to 
selling 100 feet of rail which guys used as a planning guide. Now it if they 
were thinking in hundreds  it probably woulda made more sense to sell the 
bundles as 66 X 3 so they could build 99 feet of track instead of 49.5? 
  I always wonder why guys care if the rail matches the other track on a 
layout. Wandering around the real thing I see many compromise joints where 
different sizes of rail join so having all my rail the same is the last thing 
I'd want on a layout....DaveBranum
