I wonder if those HO diesels have extra wide wheels needed to be compatible
with AF track? I doubt it. Extra wide wheels dictate extra wide sideframes.
Allowing for wide wheels and wider sideframes for AF-compatible wheels might
chew up just enough space to create a genuine space problem between the steps
-- thus necessitating swiveling pilots.
Overland Models has built similar S scale engines without swiveling pilots and
so we know it can be done in a scale-only environment. But that is not the
question.
The question facing Lionel is how to do it in BOTH scale and AF-compatible
environments on the same loco. Totally different pilots is one potential
solution which Lionel already knows about. Again, if you have a better
solution Lionel will be most happy to listen to you. Generalities do not count
as solutions.
Keep thinking and eventually a light bulb will light -- somewhere.
