Hi Bill, Interesting question. 18 inches in HO scale is 130.5 feet in full
size. That would equal about 24.5 inch radius in S scale and 32.6 inch radius
in O scale. I'm working on plans for an S scale layout of the Harlem Transfer
in the Bronx that had 90 foot radius or 16.87 inch radius in S scale. The
prototype used a GE 44 ton switcher, a boxcab loco, and a 0-4-0 steam switcher
over the years so an S version of those should be able to realistically run on
17 inch radius with no pilot problems. IIRC SHS offered some 20 inch radius
snap track so their switcher is apparently designed for 20 minimum radius?
