Bob,

Two approaches I have taken dealing with the drill dust; One is use a small brush or even a toothpick and carefully brush the dust into the hole before planting the tree. The other approach is to just ignore it, and then come back later (after the tree has been planted), and glue some ground foam along the visible part of the tree trunk where it meets the ground, covering up the dust.

Because, I had to drill holes for each of the trees, I've come across a problem that I always seem to have. When drilling into the plaster the bit will bring up a little pile of plaster dust that is hard to deal with. I have been coloring my plaster but it's not dark enough to just leave there. I have some miniature vacuum attachments that I hope will get most of it up. After that I might try some wood stain.
