Yes! Presumably, batteries were much less expensive than AC to DC
conversion! I know of a fellow near Cleveland who still uses automotive
battery power for his O gauge layout. However, a charger still converts AC to
DC......much simpler and cheaper today!

I'm not quite old enough to know first hand, but from the reading I've done,
most DC layouts were powered with batteries before the war. Simple enough to
keep them charged.
