My first car was a '60 Opel with a 6 volt system, but two of those in series would give you your 12 volts.
And I used to take a little layout - just a loop on a board - to train shows to show the AM locos in operation. At those shows that had an exorbitant charge for electrical connection, I had a little 12 V battery, made for a motorcycle. It worked fine, ran a train the whole show.
