Hello, David! As best I remember, the G&D ran with standard DC (power pack style) when we operated there in the mid 1960's. John did use three momentum style throttles that used a pair of 28 volt (I think) DC motors to gain the effect. He was a true pioneer in many areas.
On one occasion, John allowed us to bring our own motive power to operate. That might have been the only time a D&RGW L-131 ran on the G&D. Everything we brought ran really well on his system....that I do remember. The other strong memory was of walking down the stairs into the RR basement and getting a a tad dizzy because of the instant transformation to a world of HO scale. I should post the photos I shot that night. It was one heck of a layout and John was one heck of a fine man. Helpful to even a bunch of us dumb college kids.
