Just as an FYI and a bit of my speculation, I was just forwarded a
dealer e-mail, which states:
"M.T.H. Electric Trains has announced the remaining Norfolk Southern
Heritage Series diesel locomotives that will make up the entire NS
Heritage Series roster announced in the 2012 Volume 2 catalog last
April. As originally detailed in April, M.T.H. will be promoting three
series of locomotives based on the Norfolk Southern Heritage Series of
real-life SD70ACe and ES44 diesel locomotives. The locomotive series
will be featured in M.T.H.'s Premier Line O Scale SD70ACe and ES44
locomotives and RailKing Imperial O Gauge SD70ACe locomotives beginning
in the 2012 Volume 2 catalog slated for release in April 2012. In
addition to the Premier and RailKing releases, M.T.H. HO Scale SD70ACe
locomotives featuring the same Norfolk Southern Heritage paint schemes
will be promoted in the 2012 HO Volume 1 Catalog slated for release this
summer."
So, I'm speculating that since they are doing the engines in
O-scale/gauge and HO-scale, I'd imagine it is not too big a leap to do
them in S (however, no official word on the S version, though).
Explicitly competing against Lionel's S version doesn't seem to be the
primary motivation, but that is, of course, my complete and utter
speculation...
I just received my copy of "Scratchbuilding for Model Railroaders" by
Bob Walker (Carstens Publications). It looks like it is mostly a
re-composition of his articles in RMC, but nonetheless still an
interesting resource. I just thumbed through it only, and look forward
to reading it. Bob's articles in RMC are my #1 reason for subscribing to
the magazine.
