I went to Okonomowoc with the idea of a possible hosting of the NASG big show.
Roy Meissner and the rest of the group were great hosts, very helpful. As was
Ed L. and the rest of the officers I met there.

That year ( if memory serves right) the O Gaugers had their meeting here and it
was a disaster. They lost $$ big time. After hearing that we got cold feet,
so
it never came off. The DFW area is very hot in the summer, averaging over 100
in the afternoon. So most activities need to be early in the morning if
outside. A convention around early May would be more comfortable, but restrict
attendance, kids in school, etc.

We have the grapevine old time train complete with robbery on the weekends.
Tower 55 one of the busiest crossings in the country as well as a viewing area
along both the UP and BNSF. Might even be able to get a tour of the BNSF HQ.
In about a year GE will have it's new Locomotive manufacturing shop open and
producing.

Home layouts are lacking ( to my knowledge) except Chip Romig's giant Scale
display. He indicated he was going to add a narrow gauge line to it when I was
there in January. Go here to take a tour.

http://www.coloradoandsilverriver.com It is impressive!

For the flyer enthusiast there is a 24 member club, the Lone Star Flyers. Very
active and a great bunch. They have their own club house with their layout set
up between local shows.

Yes, there is a narrow gauge group that also shows around here, very
innovative. Also a great group.

A lot of years ago Houston had offered to host the NASG but it didn't work
out. Since then the enthusiasm in most has died. Normally several of our
group would attend regardless of location, but this year I wasn't able
after
being at most since the mid 80's. Billy Click and Company might have been
the only Texas people there.

Locally, we figured it would be too far for most people even within the
State, plus we figured that many would be concerned about the heat/moisture
and certainly a hurricane event would be a possibility.

We had thought the Dallas region was going to make that happen at one time.

Heck you have two clubs plus a mess of NG guys in a loose club of sorts.
Time to get your committees formed! And John shouldn't be too scared of
crossing the Mississippi, as I'm sure they'll let him back!
