The supply of old JC & Chester kits must be really diminished these days as I
saw nary a single kit at the NASG this year. That was a first for me.

Regrettably I have probably cornered the market on those old JC kits, there are
at least three dozen lost in the basement caverns. When I bought them, Tom
Shortall had just passed away and they were the only game in town for S scale.
I kept them to make my own sides using 0.016" aluminum roof flashing and a
nibbling tool. I think a few early versions are still cruising Arden
Goering's layout. I now figure I can modify them for core kits using Laser
Horizon or the more recent Union Station sides...
I have covered the roof on several with 0.005" acetate because it came in long
sheets, no seams. You can probably find styrene that thin now. It is not a
simple task but I absolutely hate sand sealing (no patience!) so it beats that.
The effect is credible and a version of a Rock Island Chair Car is on the DPV
layout. I thought I had a photo but cannot find it - next time I'm in Chicago
I'll try and get one to show the work. Of course I made the car about 20
years ago so I have learned a few things since then.
I am anxious to get some of the Union Station roof overlays and try them. The
advantage of the JC kits is that the roof contour is closer to correct than AM
and they build to the correct height... However the list of disadvantages is
pretty lengthy so for the post war S scale passenger car fan, it is still very
much a modeling world!!
