I haven't done any measurements on distance between cars with the Kadee knuckle
spring fully compressed in an 802 box.  I suppose if it really bothered me, I
could mount the box further under the car, with a cosmetic coupler-pocket front
glued on the end.

Stiffer springs will give you more bouncy-bounce until they are so stiff that
they may as well be solid metal ribs.  The trick is to use softer springs that
will remain compressed as the cars are pulled.  Thus, the light knuckle springs.
