   Hi George, I've never tried the softer springs so I don't know for sure but 
I doubt they would affect side swing or backing operation. I cut off the trip 
pins and uncouple with a screw driver or pointy stick so my couplers just have 
to function as simple couplers.and I model the modern cushion underframe era so 
extra slack don't bother me....DaveBranum
