John and others,

For a three-quarter size coupler in S, using an HO coupler, you need to use
a "scale size" coupler. In the Kadee line, this would be the #58 and #158,
which are smaller than the ubiquitous #5. The #5 and most other couplers
are just too big for HO. The other option is, of course, the Sergent HO
couplers. Contrary to popular belief, only some narrow gauge railroads used
the 3/4 size couplers; other used full size couplers of the time, which may
have been smaller than the more modern Type E.

The Maine 2-foot gauge railroads are among those that used the 3/4 size
couplers. In Sn2, the standard HO coupler box is too wide because of the
narrow track gauge. You must use either the Kadee 714/713 HOn3 couplers or
the narrow shank Sergents (EN87x series), which come in the Accurail PROTO
HO scale size draft gear boxes. In my case, I install the Sergents on my
Sn2 rolling stock.

Good Lord, that Walthers ProtoMax thing is even uglier than Kadee #5s!!! I
didn't think that was possible. :)

But seriously... it looks like it might make for a good 3/4 scale (typical
with narrow gauge roads) coupler in S scale, but not sure how it compares to
a Kadee 802/808 or a Sergent.

And for the record, Bob... I choose rather to invest my money in (and spend
my time on) improving things that need to be improved upon, not investing it
in something that is just an stand-in excuse for what I really want.
