The cost of flat cast kits for O scale is revealing. Occasionally I read the O Scale Railroading magazine. One issue appearing within the past 12 months featured the O-scale model railroad of Ray and Renee Grosser, who now live in Kentucky. They had previously modeled the Soo Line in HO but some time ago switched to O.
The photos of a consist on Ray's layout revealed an O-scale kit produced by Chooch. I believe the cost of the kit runs to about $110.00. I had once thought of going into O but switched from Fifties Lionel to S. No regrets there. S products are high enough, but costs have not ascended to the level of car kits in O. So, yes, I guess a superdetailed S-scale kit might bring up the price. As a teacher of drama, I recall one maxim I told my students was the theater is not reality but an imitation of reality. By that I mean, let's get as close as we can to reflect a given prototype but not become unglued if some details are a missing or not exact. From: Alan Lambert Fort Worth, Texas John, The main problem is scale guys want more detail that ready to run lacks. They need to fork over some money so the tooling can be made to satisfy the small add on detail parts they all hanker for. For me I'm happy with the way ready to run cars look. with extra tooling needed we would look at a $56.00 car being $100.00 or more. what do you want. My impression, as a newbie, is that this is a hobby - and the fun, for many, is in the art and craft of changing things, not in buying something. Even if it were "perfect", there would be no fun in just running it. For others, they have neither, the time, nor skill, or whatever to want to improve on very nice, acceptable items. Put another way, it's the journey, not the destination that is important. --- In mailto:S-Scale%40yahoogroups.com, "Scott" <steamtramper@...> wrote: > > Rather than hijack someones thread I am starting a new one concerning AM and > SHS models that people are always modifying.
