Bob & all,
Getting some steam locos on the track is a hassle enough without having to deal with tiny plugs too. I use the Miniatronics plugs on every install but it is for maintenance purposes in case the loco has to come apart. The shell can be unplugged from the drive. They are also getting expensive. The 4 wire Miniatronics plug is now $15.00 each I made the 3rd truck on my WSLco Shay all wheel pickup. It has a 2 wire plug there sending both rails to the loco, but I made a new box foam so the whole thing goes in the box intact. Connecting those Shay driveshafts are a real treat unto themselves. In reference to the 2 motor 2 decoder thing. Some (most?) of the River Raisin diesels made by Ajin had 2 small HO motors - not linked together. I hated that idea, and am putting a larger single motor in most of them. But my SD9 do run OK.. I have a single DSD150 in my SD9 that still have the twin HO motors - no problems. Putting 2 sound decoders in a single E unit is overkill to me. Plus you can get a Tsunami that is supposed to be able to simulate the dual motors in an E unit. If I have a A B A lash up I program the decoders to be very slightly different so they will go in and out of sync. You can hear that.
