Don, I think you made the right move in making a semi permanent connection. Most of the problems I have are those tiny connectors soldered to even finer wire. Since you engine was relatively small lifting both components with one hand is possible. IMHO that is the only major problem that still remains in our DCC world--the fine connections and the hair clog of wires near the decoder! I know guys who have tried to make some kind of connection but I've seen any satisfactory solution as yet.

As I looked at the prototype, I realize they had rather large water hoses between the two, so we hid 5 wires in each black water hose and used screws in the drawbar. If you want, you can remove the tender as they installed a 10 pin jst plugged into the tender socket pcb. You do have to remove the tender shell to get to the plug.
