This was the same dilemma that we had during the design of our 2-8-0. I too
hated having to plug in the tender plus we had 10 conductors between the tender
and the loco. As I looked at the prototype, I realize they had rather large
water hoses between the two, so we hid 5 wires in each black water hose and
used screws in the drawbar. If you want, you can remove the tender as they
installed a 10 pin jst plugged into the tender socket pcb. You do have to
remove the tender shell to get to the plug.
