You make a good point.  Even a photo of a single scene from a layout in MR 
"Trackside Photos" is a valuable 'sales' tool for S and a good way to break 
into publishing.  Once you get something published, it's a bug you can catch.

An excellent resource for help in preparing articles for publication is the 
NMRA MAGAZINE.  The last three issues (Jan, Feb and March 2013) contain a three 
part series entitled "From Concept to Publication".  The content includes how 
to identify appropriate subject matter, how to set up and take photographs, 
guidelines for writing a good text and captions, and how and in what format to 
submit the finished project to a magazine.  Collectively it is one of the most 
complete article on the subject I've seen and I'd recommend it to anyone who is 
looking for a little help.  Copies would be available from the NMRA, of course.
