Hi Alan; Not really, you can run scale wheels on old metal-tie Flyer track if you want. The problem comes with the switches/turnouts. Then you need closed frog or Tom's turnouts.
I know a lot of folks with layouts using closed frog turnouts to accommodate both wheel types. Pieter E.
