With all due respect to Peter and others following suite... Peter and I had a similar conversation about a year ago when he was here.
A friend is big time in P48. He is going with some form of a dead track system. I am not sure which one. I think it is generally agreed that some brand of DCC is the current dominant mode of serious model railroad control. Whether it is ahead or behind old school DC is not important - at least to me. For this email I am NOT discussing or comparing performance or features. All other ideas and control systems have to be significantly less patronized than DCC or DC. There is that system (I forget the name) we discussed here a few months ago that is wireless right to the locomotives without any central control station. Their claim to fame is ease of MUing units which it seemingly does do pretty well. MUing is by far not that important to me. Also all from one company - way TOO proprietary for me. I will not buy in big only to have them tank leaving me with a bunch of now worthless electronics. If you have been wondering - here is my point. We (including my P48 friend) are already in a very minority scale. Adding a "boutique" control system really removes your rolling stock from what is already a very small market. Eventually this all has to be sold. I have never found DCC to be so difficult, intrusive, or did not perform well enough to seek out something different.
