Bill,

I’m with Bill Winans on this. I don’t really care what my models are worth
unless I have a loss and I have to replace them; and I have insurance for that.
I’ve been known to decrease the value of brass by lettering and modifying it
for my own railroad. Nothing has to be sold; it can be given away or thrown in
the trash. I don’t view trains as an investment, just a hobby expense.

As far as changing control systems in a model, it’s no big deal. I have been
using some form of command control since the mid-1980’s and I have motive power
in which DCC is the their third type of command control system. And some of my
motive power has had more than one DCC decoder installed. It’s really no
different than changing the details on a piece of rolling stock to make it a
better model for the owner’s use, and I’ve done that too. Actually when I
switched to DCC almost twenty years ago, it could have been considered a
“boutique” control system.

With all due respect to Peter and others following suit…..

... here is my point: We (including my P48 friend) are already in a very
minority scale. Adding a “boutique” control system really removes your rolling
stock from what is already a very small market. Eventually this all has to be
sold.
