As has been pointed out, you will undoubtedly notice that these cars are a
bit larger than Gilbert boxcars and tank cars. These cars were produced from
original Marx 3/16 scale tooling, as was announced right from the start.
Keep in mind that real boxcars came in many different sizes, as did tank
cars, although Gilbert only modeled one specific size of each. These
boxcars, for example, scale out to 43 feet in length, 10.5 wide, and 15
above the rails.

Quoting from the January 1983 Official Railway Equipment Directory, box cars
ranged in length from 40' 6" to 47' 9", widths from 10' 4" to 10' 8" and
heights from 13' 7" to 15' 1". Thus, these boxcars fall within those specs
in all three dimensions. Yes, they look "oversized" next to ACG cars, but
ACG cars were among the smaller cars modeled.

We did not research tank car specs in the R.E.D., but I am sure that the
results would be similar.
